Description

Rice University seeks an experienced writer to support fundraising and external relations for OpenStax. You will write grants, fuel creative storytelling, and help grow philanthropic and strategic initiatives that support the OpenStax mission to improve educational access and learning for everyone.

OpenStax is part of Rice University, a 501©3 nonprofit research institution in Houston, Texas. OpenStax is a worldwide leader in open education, personalized technology, and learning science research, impacting more than four million students each year.

You will join a team who is driving change at a pivotal phase of our evolution, as we deliver high-quality, educational content — spanning textbooks, simulations, videos, exercises, and full courses — and give educators and learners the support they need in core college and high school disciplines.

We celebrate diversity of all kinds and we are committed to nurturing an inclusive environment. We seek to hire, develop, and retain talented people from all backgrounds. We are part of a private university, but our team comes from a variety of backgrounds and includes people who attended universities and community colleges, as well as people who did not graduate from college.

Reporting to the director of strategy and development, you will be responsible for crafting compelling and persuasive proposals and communications for a variety of strategic priorities and fundraising prospects, spanning individuals, foundations, corporations, educational institutions, and/or governmental entities. You will collaborate with key stakeholders — including OpenStax leaders and team members, central development staff, donors, faculty, and students — to plan and manage grant projects, strategize on messaging, and articulate connections to the OpenStax mission and goals. Other writing and editing assignments may include solicitation and acknowledgement letters, brochures/ annual reports, slide decks, website and email content, briefings, stories, and other related communications as needed.

The ideal candidate is creative, collaborative, motivated, entrepreneurial, and highly organized, possessing clear communication skills, a curiosity for learning, an understanding of the education landscape, and a passion for nonprofit impact.
